SuperValu work in community honoured at County Mayors Awards

SuperValu Clifden took the 2013 Award for best Business Contribution to the Community at this year’s County Mayors Awards, held in the Claregalway Hotel on November 19.

Store manager Joe Lynch said: ‘Throughout the years SuperValu has time and time again shown their support for all of the local community.

‘More than 65 local people are employed in the Clifden store, and seasonally up to 90. Wherever possible, support is given to local suppliers: Corner Stones, Walsh’s Bakery, Connemara Smokehouse, Moycullen Hams, Green Earth Organics, Red’s Sauces, Harvest Moon, Jack & Eddies and Morans Butchers, to name but a few.

‘These businesses all supply their products to the store and offer tastings on their products in store throughout the year.

‘Support is also given to local business through active roles in the Connemara Chamber of Commerce, Clifden Tidy Towns, Clifden Lotto and the Clifden Retailers Group. Donations are given throughout the year to local clubs, schools, pony shows, charities and also to Clifden Tidy Towns.

‘Kavanagh’s SuperValu are committed to reducing, reusing, and recycling waste, and also provide location, maintenance and upkeep of the town’s public toilets. We have received the Supreme Quality Award since 2008.

‘As well as sponsoring activities, SuperValu Clifden realise the importance of community involvement and our younger generation.

‘Throughout the year we host coffee mornings and health and information mornings for adults, as well as children’s Halloween and Christmas parties, colouring competitions and children’s poetry writing competitions alongside Connemara Community Radio.

‘Naomh Feichin GAA Club were the winners of the SuperValu Community Den competition,  winning €5,000 for the club earlier this year. This would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication to the club shown by Ann Mitchell. This is a great achievement and a great help in improving amenities locally.

A special thanks also to Councillor Eileen Mannion who gave us help and guidance to be in the position to receive this award.

‘Through the hard work and dedication of our staff and customers over the past two years, we have also been able to present Cancer Care West with almost €25,000, through our “Help us to help others” campaign.

‘We at SuperValu Clifden are very proud of our store and its involvement within the local community and we greatly appreciate the loyalty and support of all our customers.‘
