Kavanagh’s SuperValu Westport has reopened its doors following a major redevelopment, with the Shop Street store unveiling an extended, state-of-the-art layout after a €4 million investment.
The relaunch marks 42 years of trading on Shop Street, in the heart of Westport.
The redevelopment has increased the store’s floor space by 20 per cent. The extra room has made way for an additional aisle, increased refrigeration, a dedicated sushi bar and an enlarged off-licence.
Customers will also find an expanded bakery and cake selection, a wider world foods range, and a new ready meals section placed at the centre of the fresh aisle for easy meal solutions.
A larger coffee shop, a post office, and additional car parking spaces have also been added.
The Westport store moved from the Octagon to its current Shop Street location in November 1984. It now employs more than 120 people.
The store continues to support a number of local producers, including Glasraí Organic Farm, Sinéad’s Gardens, Cabots of Westport, Kelly’s of Newport, Jack and Eddie’s Sausages, and the Breadski Brothers.
Energy efficiency featured heavily in the redevelopment. New LED lighting and energy-efficient refrigeration have been installed, and the works are expected to cut the store’s emissions by 20 per cent, in line with SuperValu’s wider sustainability commitments.
Noel Kavanagh Jnr, Managing Director of the Kavanagh Group, said the team was delighted to unveil the expanded store after months of hard work.
“The state-of-the-art store will deliver premium quality and fantastic value to our customers, with increased floor space allowing for an additional aisle, enhanced shopping experience, and offerings including our new-look bakery, sushi bar and cheese counter, alongside a strong range of local products from local suppliers,” he said.
He added that the additional supermarket space, the post office, the enhanced O’Cees coffee shop, the existing hardware store and extra parking would strengthen the store’s role as a community hub in Westport town centre.

The store has long supported local clubs and causes. Store Manager Liam Campion has played a leading role in Westport’s SuperValu TidyTowns committee for many years. The store also backs Westport United, local GAA clubs, and athletics and rugby clubs in the area.
